Hemp has been around for ages and dates back to the 28th century BC. It is sold at stores for use in cooking, skin care products, and many other uses.

Cannabis (aka. marijuana) and hemp are 2 varieties of the same plant species, cannabis sativa. CBD (cannibidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are critical components found in cannabis sativa. THC is the compound which give its psychoactive properties.

What is Hemp and CBD Oil?

Most CBD oil or Hemp oil contains the beneficial CBD without the THC and they typically comes from hemp and not marijuana. It means that your dog will not get "high" from taking CBD oil. Hemp is one of those species, although it produces CBD in very low levels — around 25 parts per million. For comparison, CBD oil made from regular marijuana reaches around 15% concentration or 15 parts per hundred, about ten thousand times more.

Hemp oil (or Hempseed Oil) is extracted from the seeds of the cannabis sativa and contains trace amounts of CBD without the THC whereas hemp based CBD (cannabidiol) oil is made from the leaves, flowers, and stalks of the plant that is rich in CBD and contains less than 0.3% THC to be sold legally.

Hemp seed oil contains the perfect ratio of Omega-6 (linoleic acid) to Omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) fatty acids. These are essential fatty acids, meaning your dog can’t produce them and needs to get them in their diet. A good balance of these Omega oils is critical to your dog’s health. Hemp seeds are also high in an essential Omega-6 fatty acid called gamma linolenic acid (GLA).

Many studies have shown the health benefits of CBD, the most encouraging result is that CBD appears to be safe , even when taken over extended periods of time.

Hemp oil and CBD oil could be a healthy or even life-saving for your dog. More and more pet owners and holistic vets are drawn to its diverse health benefits.

Is CBD Legal?

In 2018, a farm bill passed by congress making industrial hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) legal nationwide. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved.
